Born in October 1926, Bettye is one of the rare Black Americans whose life literally spans the most important and iconic moments in American History.

When she was a student at Spelman College, was Langston Hughes a visiting lecturer? Yes and by the way, he sat on the desk, smoked and put his ashes in the desk drawer. There are pictures and she was there!

And yes, she knew (dated) young MLK (come to the artist talk, she will spill the tea).

As a mother of 4 in the 1970’s, Bettye began to pursue her passion for art. She always combined art and art administration, hiring artists for school districts and for public art, in short, centering art in the lives of people for whom too often art was tangential or non-existent.

A champion of civil rights, a person who understands the power of art to create meaningful dialogue, those who love and admire her most, were not surprised that in her 80’s she became curious about women who lived or dressed as men.

So at this moment when Trans and LGBTQI + experiences are front and center, Bettye, aged 98, brings you, Berdache, an exhibit that invites us to spend time in the shoes of people who figured out how to be their full selves in the society in which they lived.

Please pass the word about this opportunity to anyone you know who may be interested. Bettye and Janis would be delighted to meet and mingle with as of our community as possible.
